Watch “The Most Important Lesson Learned from 87,000 Brain Scans – Dr. Daniel Amen” on YouTube

This is really interesting…

I am not sure about anything but amazed by everything. I struggle with erratic moods. I don't know if it is a disorder, a gift, or a little bit of both, but I am going to try to embrace them, let myself feel them, and hopefully come out wiser on the other side.

  1. One reason I called my blog ‘Neurodrooling’ is because I use it to take on the massive epistemological overreach of pop neurologists such as Amen. These people have neither the data nor the philosophical framework to support a fraction of the claims they’re making.

I haven’t specifically had a go at Amen on my blog but there’s plenty of well grounded critiques of his work out there – notably the one by Robert Burton at Salon.com in which he takes apart Amen’s claims he can diagnose or treat Alzheimer’s on the basis of SPECT scans.

Burton is both a neuroscientist and a philosopher of science and his book A Skeptic’s Guide to the Mind: What Neuroscience Can and Cannot Tell Us About Ourselves is a powerful antidote to the kind of claims made by people like Amen. If you want an EPUB copy just make a comment to that effect somewhere on my blog and I’ll email it to you. Maybe the post The Cure would be the most apt place to make it ;).
